LECTURES

Lecture 1: Using the pen tool
27.8.18 (Week 1)

I cannot attend class because of visa matters. So I ask my friends about the lectures.

1.1 Given template of shapes/elements

1.2 My traced shapes/elements

Designing Character's Silhouette (Week 1)

After tracing out the shapes, we were told to make a vormator design using those shapes.

There are rules for designing the vormator:
  1. Scaling the proportion is allowed, no free transform.
  2. Elements can be rotated, flip and duplicated.
  3. Gradients is allowed.
  4. No filters or effects.
  5. Elements are allowed to add, subtract, intersect or group.
1.3 Character's Silhouette

Lecture 2: -
3.9.18 (Week 2)

Still cannot attend the class due to visa matters and late arrivals. But my friends told me that we did not have a lecture this week, we can just continue working on our vormator.

Lecture 3: Shape builder & Gradient

14.9.18 (Week 3)

For this lecture, we learned about combining shapes. The tool called shape builder (Shift + M).

The steps are:

  1. Select All (V) the overlapping shapes.
  2. Click Shape builder (Shift + M), there must be a plus (+) sign on the cursor to know which shape needs to combine or delete.
  3. Left click button on the mouse, drag the shapes to combine.
We also learn about Gradient tool (G).

Here are the steps:
  1. Click Windows, Gradient tool
  2. Choose Linear/Radial
  3. Click color/swatches to choose colour, then drag it to the gradient slider.
I couldn't find my practice file about this lecture because at the time I don't have any laptop yet. So, I was using Taylor's Uni' laptop.

3.1 Shape builder

3.2 Gradient tool

We also got some tips for us to edit our vormator. This week lecture helps us to improve our vormator design.

Lecture 4: Drawing techniques in Illustrator
21.9.18 (Week 4)

This week's lecture, we were showed about drawing techniques in Illustrator. We were told about using different types of brushes in Illustrator like, Paintbrush tool (B), Blob brush tool (Shift + B) and using regular shapes with Direct Selection tool (A). We were also learned about creating our own type of brush.

The steps are:

  1. Go to Windows, Brushes and select the third small icon on the bottom right "Create new brush".
  2. Select calligraphy pen and name your brush.
  3. Adjust the angle, roundness, and size of your brush.
  4. Click OK.
I can't try it because I still don't have a Wacom and the Wacom drive.

Other than that, we also learn how to draw using Blob brush tool (Shift +B)

The steps are:
  1. Draw something/shape/character using Blob brush tool (Shift + B)
  2. After drawing, choose a colour from Swatches/Color panel
  3. Trace the outline of shape you create
  4. Click on Direct selection tool (A) and then click one of the inner point handles, delete
  5. Repeat the same steps until it's fully coloured.
We also taught about using textures. This lesson can helps us to improve our vormator design.

The steps are:
  1. Search for the texture you want in web
  2. Copy the image and paste it near the shape/character.
  3. Click Windows, Transparency
  4. Click on the texture image and copy
  5. Click on the shape and "Make mask"
  6. Untick Clip and select the mask box
  7. On the mask box, paste the texture
  8. You'll see a highlighted blue box (texture) then drag it to the shape/character
4.1 Using grunge texture in illustrator

Lecture 5: Chiaroscuro

28.9.18 (Week 5)

This week lecture, we learned about Chiaroscuro. Mr.Kanaan taught us the chiaroscuro on a pear image.

The steps are:

  1. Search for Chiaroscuro pear, save the image.
  2. Open image in illustrator
  3. Create new layer, trace the outline of the pear using pen tool
  4. Reflect the traced outline (don't forget to place the arrow on the centra point of the outline.
  5. Use Pathfinder to merge the outlines together, reduce opacity
  6. Create new layer, Pen/Knife tool to trace the shadows, merge it
  7. Use Knife tool to cut a pattern on the pear
  8. Choose a colour
  9. Separate each part, draw any shape on one of the parts to create depths.
These techniques can help us to create highlights and shadows of a drawing and painting.

5.1 Real pic of the pear

5.2 One of my chiaroscuro exercise result

I also tried this exercise using a silhouette of a person.

5.3 Real pic of the person (Man on the right)

5.4 My exercise result

I also apply last week's lesson, which I add a skin texture to my chiaroscuro exercise.

Lecture 6: Types of Panel Transitions
1.10.18 (Week 6)

For this week's lecture, we learned about six types of panel transitions. We were introduced about Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics.

6.1 Transitions type 1-3
6.2 Transitions type 4-6

Mr.Hafiz also told us to do some exercise about the transitions. It helps us to learn about the transitions. This exercise also related to our Project 1.

6.3 The Story for the exercise

6.4 Result of the exercise

Lecture 7: Shading a circle
19.10.18 (Week 8)

This week we were taught on how to paint the highlights and shadows using the brush tool. We used an eclipse tool as an example. We were suggested to use drawing tablet. We also learn how to use paintbucket tool.

Lecture 8: Perspective drawing
26.10.18 (Week 9)

Using drawing tablet, Mr.Kanaan taught us on how to draw simple vertical and horizontal strokes using the drawing tablet pen.

8.1 Screenshot of the layer

8.2 Full look of the exercise
