Lecture 10: -

No lecture for this week.

Lecture 11: -

No lecture for this week.

From this lecture, I learned how typography is used in different mediums. This lecture will help us on doing the final project.

Here is another lecture about perception and organisation of typography:

From this lecture I learn how the typeface, layout and content structure can affect the readability and aesthetic of the type.

INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project

Design, Exploration & Application (Week 9 - Week 13)

28.05.19 (Week 9)

We were briefed on what is our final project about. The idea of our in final project have to have a purpose or a problem to solve.

From this, I did a research on other's designer's experimental typography.

Progress

Here's my idea for the final project:

After consultation, Mr.Vinod suggested me to do a dual lingual typeface. Mr.Vinod showed me an example of a font from google fonts named 'Baloo Bhaijaan'.

Figure 1.3 Reference

I have to do the same thing, except I don't need to do numbers, lowercase and symbols. After deciding the idea, I do some research on the Javanese scripts alphabet. I learn that the Javanese scripts have pairs or called 'PASANGAN'.  I also know that there are some different thickness in the Javanese scripts that I have to maintain for the designs.

I decided to create my own style for the Javanese script typeface and the Roman typeface and I choose this picture (above) as a guide for me to know what are the letters/elements that I need to design since there are so many ways to write Javanese script.

1.11 First attempt on the Roman letters

Mr.Vinod told me that my roman typeface still looks rough. Some letter doesn't really look like the Javanese scripts that I make.

FEEDBACK

Week 11

Online feedback: You need to look at your letters with the script. So try a shop signage- just show the top section of the shop with a sign and place yours on it instead. Before you do the above, just test the text side by side.

Week 12
Online Feedback: Make a comparison with O and B,C,E or K. Is it consistent? Your applications lack umph! It doesn’t put enough spot light on your text. Make the applications more exciting.

Online feedback: Do some more la. It looks nice. Tote bag... etc?

REFLECTIONS

EXPERIENCES

Week 11

I had lots of ideas, but to find the purpose is quite hard. It's not easy to decide the topic for this project. I was thinking too much on the ideas which is wasting my time.

Week 12

This week I finally decided to do dual lingual typeface in the class. It was hard because the Javanese Aksara's curves is actually quite complicated, especially when I have to design a new typeface. To make the typeface consistent I have to maintain the same strokes and curves, it was hard and takes a lot of time.

OBSERVATIONS

Week 11

I see that my friends also have the same difficulties on choosing and deciding the ideas, but they have some interesting ideas.

Week 12

I found a reference and guide that could help me on the research about the Javanese scripts elements or letters. I also observe that making a specific characteristic and maintaining it, it could help me on designing a consistent typeface.

FINDINGS

Week 11

It was not easy to decide the idea. But we just have to do it right away and don't think too much because we can learn through the process of designing.

Week 12

I found out that the application have to put spot light on my typeface. I have includes various letters to my application so people can know the characteristic of my typeface.

FURTHER READING

The writer show her working process on making the new typeface. It helps to know what are the important things that we should think about when we are making a new typeface.

  • Perancangan Typeface Latin Wicaksana Adaptasi dari Aksara Jawa

This person is writing about how she makes a roman typeface based on an existing Javanese scripts font. She's telling the process and how she do some research and analysis. Her style is really different with mine, but it helps me to understand the Javanese script more.
