Lecture 1: Introduction to Module
Week 1
The first week of the class we were briefed about the module. We were told that we would be doing a project with a company clients. The lecturer gave us some list for us to choose which project we are going to work on. The projects includes us to work with computing students. There are 6 people in the groups. 3 Design students, 3 Computing students. The company that we are going to work with is the Petrosains company.

Design Innovation and Disruptors
Week 1
Question 1:
Please describe what is Design Innovation based on the article "What is Design Innovation? by Alex Obenauer". Please cite some examples to elaborate your observations.
Based on the article, Design Innovation is a design process that has innovative concept which changes the way consumers interact with the products to make their life easier. The most important thing is to show benefits.

Please watch this documentary about Design Disruptors and write a short essay about what are Design Disruptors with cited examples.

From the video, I get that the meaning of Design Disruptors are people who are willing to take actions to create things from a new perspective by solving a problem using newer technologies. They create new waves that have impacts and gives opportunities and interests towards people for a better future.
PROJECTS
Week 1
The first week of the class we need to choose our group, after choosing our group we all decide which clients we would want to work with. My group, we joined Petrosains. We got to know the IT students and discussed our jobs. The tasks were divided based on our specialization in design.
Week 2
This week we had a meeting with Petrosains to know about the project and what they are expecting from us. The meeting was held in Zoom. Basically, the project is: Petrosains wanted to make an interactive website that enables children to learn virtually despise being home.
After searching information about Petrosains, my team has decided that we will be focusing on Tech Lab and have discussed on our ideas. We found some references about game that might be educational for children and related to our project.
Week 3
I understand on what to do with the project, especially for the design part. I get that it is my job to do the unity space, since I am the new media student. I also make a discussion about the Unity assets that I want to put in case everyone have other opinions on it.
I have to create 2 space, the tech garden and tech lab in Unity. At first I was a little bit anxious by that because even though I’m a new media student, I’ve never learn any 3D before. But after I had a meeting with the Unity group, I understand that it is not that difficult. I only have to download a space from Unity assets store and then improve it. This week we also discussed on what to add into our Unity space. I also have to prepare and make a floorplan on the unity space. I created a rough sketch so I can explain it to other team members. I understand that I also have to keep updating the floorplan to the other team members so we can have the same vision on how the flow is going to be (when players enter the space → download the game). I also think about the flowchart for the UI later on. We discuss everything with the computing team as well.

Based on the article, Design Innovation is a design process that has innovative concept which changes the way consumers interact with the products to make their life easier. The most important thing is to show benefits.
From this article, I understand that design innovation often involves making products, more desirable, usable, and effective.
One of the examples was Coca - Cola. Coca Cola’s design innovation to achieve specific business goals, and it worked. The bottle that was produced by the company was generic and often and copied by many imitators. To solve it, Coca-Cola designed a new bottle. The shape became so iconic that it was then used as an image on the company’s cans.

Basically, what i understand is that, design innovation needs a unique blend of design thinking to make a product and it focused mainly on addressing people’s need. So, as a designer we need to have a fresh perspective and broad knowledge of materials and techniques, so we can and do find ways of making our products more efficient and useful.
Another example is Google Home.
The inventor imagined an interactive technology to make life easier through home-integrated voice activation. Simply put, Google Home makes every task easier, faster, and better. Just tell it what you need and it provides. It has so many functionality. It could play music, set a timer, can be used as a light switch, and increase the Wifi signal as well.

Design Disruptors solve problems and build something from the ground for people to have a better user experience. It is understood that designers should not just focus on the aesthetics or the tech, but should also think business and customer experience beyond the product we design.
One example, Taxis and Grabs. Design disruptors have thought of something new of having an online taxi where passengers can easily find drivers. They can can arrange where and when you want to be picked up, keep track of the vehicles before they arrive as well. Now, people think that Grabs are an easier and faster way to go anywhere other than taxi.

Week 4
I understand that we have to make sure the game works with the objectives that we had (ex: teach coding for kids). Luckily, our idea of the coding game is similar and has been tested before by some other game developers, so it is proved that it’s working. We write down our game ideas and art direction in miro board. We put some of our character reference, environment references, color palette. We discuss the style for our game, the storyline, and what are the assets that we need to prepare for the games, such as the 3D model, the UI buttons.
This week I think a lot about the design process and the flowchart for the UI. I understand that we have to prepare the flowchart (from players getting into the space until they access the game). All of us (including the computing team) also discuss about the flowchart. I look for some ideas for the UI Design and started to write down what are the buttons that I need to design and also how the layout is going to look like. Our game is pretty straightforward and simple so it is not so hard to plan the layouts.

Week 5
I continue doing my Unity space and also update it to my teammates whether they want me to put anything else in the space. I also created the UI buttons, animation and graphic for the 2 games. It was a bit hectic for me because I have to make changes for Unity and at the same time I have to create UI designs. But I can make it work, Me and Feryn, since she is the graphic student, we coordinate well on all the graphics.
It took a long time to work on the Unity space because it is quite hard to look for free downloadable 3D assets. I change all the colors into petrosains color, since Mr. Mike told us to. I try to make the UI Design look consistent, i think it is important to maintain consistency in all the buttons graphics, and looks. Me and Feryn keep updating each other our progress on all the graphics so we can maintain the same style for all of our works.

This week i really understand that each team members might have different vision, mood, motivation and understanding on the project, even if we already discussed everything, it is really important for us to keep coordinate with each other every single time. Everytime we discuss something, we have to have a long term vision about the project. I also learn to trust my team members on their own job, even if we have really different styles on the design and way of working, it is important to always discuss it until we solve the problems.
Week 6
This week we do a presentation and present it to the client and we get some feedbacks from them.

We change the style for the game, the unity space, and the storyline of the game. We discuss everything with the computing team. This week, after the consultation, I understand that I have to make changes on the Unity space. For the tech lab, I have to make it similar as the real tech lab that petrosains have. Two members in our group have to go to petrosains to see the actual place and make a documentation on it. I coordinate with all the team members and discuss on what they agree for me to put into the Unity space.
This week, we prepare on the sketch on how each levels going to look like. We discuss on how the gameflow will look like, and how each levels going to be (what are the challenges, assets, environment looks like, start and finish line). After that we can continue on creating the environment for each levels.
Week 7
We’ve decided on what to put in the unity space. So I started looking for the 3D assets for the unity space and continue on the UI Designs. I understand that by changing our idea, we have to start thinking back again on the art direction. By changing the idea, we have to change all the styles. It is challenging for us because there isn’t much time to discuss and start over again. We have to work fast this week. Mr.Mike told us about the timeline chart. It is really helpful for us so we can keep on track on what should we do each day. It is important for us to plan everything so we can make progress and finish what we should do on time. The chart also helps us to divide all the works, so the each job is equal. It’s still a little bit challenging for me to manage the teamwork perfectly, but somehow i don’t have any problem in doing my part. I understand that each team members have to help each other on doing the work. It is important to focus on our part, but once we could finish it, we can always ask other member whether they need help or not, because this is a teamwork, by helping each other, it will benefits the final results of the project later on.
Week 8
After the meeting, I understand that i have to add other various color to the UI designs and the size for it is too big for PC size. I have to do a mockup on how the UI will look like in a real PC computer. For the environments of the tech lab game, make sure that it looks consistent with the UI Designs. We have to edit our timeline chart as well, so Mr.Mike can track our works well. For the game, it is recommended that we have to do user testing, we need to make sure that our objectives of the game really works, it is to teach the kids on how to do coding, so we have to make sure the players did learn something from our game.
I also did a meeting for the Unity space, I get that I have to discuss on which interactivity we will choose for the assets in the space. It is better to discuss it with the computing team, because they will do the coding, etc. It is kind of challenging for us because we know that the computing team never really use unity before, so we all have to research together ourselves about it. This week we work on the 2D assets and also start to figure out the animation for the game. The animation team did the animation.
Week 9
This week I’m helping my group mates with environments and graphics. We need to make it look consistent with our UI design. Our UI design has Jelly buttons, so we follow that for the assets in the environment (buildings, trees, road, etc). We learn from some of the top down game references. Even though none of the game references have the same style with ours, but we get to know what kind of environment works for a top down view game.
I also design a new bare conductive and change the design style for the components. Previously, our bare conductive didn't even have a good perspective and it seems like players couldn’t recognize the components well because of our design, the perspective and design style could create confusion for the players. So this week i redesign it and i change it into top down view. I try to make it look like a real bare conductive, so player could have better experience in the game. I also make some changes for the UI Design since we change our gameplay design.






Week 10
This week i work on the environment and make a few changes. After the consultation, we get that our environment colors looks dull. It wouldn’t look appealing. So I did more research on how to make a city top down view graphics. I understand that our environment didn’t really represent a city. It looks like we’re trying so hard to make it look like our UI Design. Also, the trees in the environment looks more like buttons, so we have to change it. It is also suggested to put the KLCC logo in the petronas tower, so players can know what building is it. For the hospital, we redesign and refer to the real hospital in KL. This week we are focusing on the graphics and environments.
Week 11
We decided to create more graphics to make the visual design better. We added a few more graphics onto the environment and the UI. We also discussed the interaction for the Unity. What are the stuff that we need to put in, so all the assets in the Unity become interactable. We discussed all of this with the IT team as well, since we might be doing the interactivity with them as well. We decided to put videos into the screen and make put some pop up information into the space. The robot and the 3D printer will have a pop up information when the user walk near it. I will be doing the video on the screens.
Week 12
The IT team work on the interactive demo for the game. We also created some animation for us to presents our game better. I start to work on the Unity space. I download all the videos and compress it into smaller file size. Then, i put it all onto the monitor screens. I asked the animation student to do some animation videos for me to put onto the Unity.
Week 13
We are still creating the animation of the gameplay. I finished the screens and sent the unity files for the IT team to continue with other interactivity. The IT team already done with the interactivity, but some of our designs are distorted and it doesn’t look good.
Week 14
We finished and improve the animation since we’re not going to use the interactive prototype, which means that the whole presentation will be simulated animation videos. The IT team put the animation video onto the screen. So, the user need to click ‘E’ to open the animation video.
